Co-registration (also "co-reg") is a lead generation method in which a user, during a sign-up, for a newsletter, a prize draw, or a download, additionally consents to being contacted with third-party offers. A single sign-up thereby produces one or more leads for partner companies.
How co-registration works
The process is tied to an already existing sign-up flow:
- Primary sign-up: The user registers for a main offer, for example a newsletter.
- Additional offer: Relevant partner offers are displayed on or after the sign-up page.
- Active consent: The user consents deliberately, ideally per partner separately and without pre-selection.
- Lead handover: The contact data is transmitted, together with documented consent, to the respective partner.
Example
An energy tariff comparison portal offers, after the newsletter sign-up: "Would you also like to receive offers from insurance partners?" If the user actively selects "Yes" and confirms it, a qualified lead is created for the insurance partner. If the consent is properly logged and confirmed via double opt-in, the lead is legally sound and usable.
GDPR and consent
Co-registration lives or dies by the quality of consent. Under the GDPR, consent must be freely given, informed, specific, and demonstrable. Pre-ticked checkboxes or blanket consent for unspecified "partners" are not permitted. It is advisable to name the recipients clearly, obtain separate consent per purpose, and keep complete documentation, often supplemented by a double opt-in that confirms the consent once more.
How Leadnodes does it
Leadnodes processes co-reg leads cleanly and in a legally sound manner. During intake via API, form, or CSV, the platform checks completeness, duplicates, and the presence of a valid double opt-in, and documents the consent in an audit-proof way. In rule-based distribution, each lead reaches the right buyer based on vertical, region, and lead quality. Since co-reg leads convert at varying rates, reporting helps you compare conversion rate and cost per lead per source and weed out weak sources.
FAQ
Is co-registration GDPR-compliant?
Yes, provided consent is given freely, specifically, informed, and demonstrably. Pre-ticked boxes or unclear recipients make the lead unusable.
How does co-reg differ from single opt-in leads?
With co-registration, the user consents to third-party offers within the context of another process. An additional double opt-in noticeably increases legal certainty and quality.
Why does the quality of co-reg leads vary?
Because the user primarily signed up for a different offer, purchase intent is often weaker. Clear offers and a confirmed double opt-in significantly improve results.
